Field Study: The Lodge at Unicoi State Park

There’s a unique energy that comes from creating on-location. I recently spent some time at the beautiful Unicoi State Park Lodge here in Georgia and found myself drawn to the quiet, visually rich corners of its interior.

This illustration was born from that moment. It was an opportunity not only to practice direct observation—capturing the interplay of light, shadow, and texture as I saw it—but also to give my new Faber-Castell Pitt pens a real-world field test.

I found their ability to layer was essential for building up the deep shadows and distinguishing the textures of the aged wood from the cool stone. For me, studies like this are more than just practice; they are a way of truly seeing a place and documenting a fleeting moment.
